Annual Fertilizing and Watering Guide

How We Fertilize Hanging Baskets and Planters

At The Greenhouse, we fertilize our annual baskets and planters every third watering. We use a balanced 20-20-20 water-soluble fertilizer to keep them looking full and healthy.

Fertilizers We Recommend

We stock several fertilizer brands we love and trust. Fertilome offers two great options: Rooting and Blooming, and All Purpose. Both can be used throughout your yard. Just follow the directions on the label for how much to use.

We also carry Fox Farm Fertilizers. Grow Big and Tiger Bloom are two of our favorites. These work well for both indoor and outdoor plants. As always, follow the instructions on the package.

How to Know When to Water

Check your hanging baskets and planters every day. The easiest way is to stick your finger into the soil. If it feels dry, it’s time to water. If the soil still feels moist, wait and check again later. Our summers can dry out plants quickly. During the hottest part of the season, you might need to water more than once a day. Still, it’s important to check the soil first. Over-watered and under-watered plants can look very similar.

Make Sure You Water Deeply

When you water, make it count. Deep watering is important. This often means watering once, waiting 10 to 15 minutes, and watering again. You’ll know it’s enough when water runs out the bottom of the planter.
