Watering and Fertilizing Annuals: Hanging Baskets and Planters
At The Greenhouse, we handle watering and fertilizing with care. We fertilize our annual baskets and planters every third watering using a balanced 20-20-20 water-soluble fertilizer for annuals. This schedule keeps them looking full and healthy throughout the season.
Best Fertilizers for Annuals
We stock several fertilizer brands we love and trust. Fertilome offers two great options: Rooting and Blooming, and All Purpose. Both can be used throughout your yard. Just follow the directions on the label for how much to use.
We also carry Fox Farm Fertilizers. Grow Big and Tiger Bloom are two of our favorites. These work well for both indoor and outdoor plants. As always, follow the instructions on the package.
How Often You Should Water Annual Flowers
Check your annual baskets and planters every day. The easiest way is to stick your finger into the soil. If it feels dry, it’s time to water. If the soil still feels moist, wait and check again later. Our summers can dry out plants quickly. During the hottest part of the season, you might need to water more than once a day. Still, it’s important to check the soil first. Over-watered and under-watered plants can look very similar.
Best Way to Water Hanging Baskets and Planters
The best way to water hanging baskets is to water deeply. This often means watering once, waiting 10 to 15 minutes, and watering again. You’ll know it’s enough when water runs out the bottom of the planter.
